Jason celebrates the return of the San Jose Earthquakes!
So I was going to write about the panel discussion I attended last night about horror movies. Interesting panel, but didn't really tell me anything new about horror. Mostly it was just fun watching knowledgable horror fans geek out (the most fun was when people disagreed about specific movies, but those arguments were defused pretty quickly).
But on the way home I learned that my beloved San Jose Earthquakes are coming back in 2008. Woo Hoo! A more official announcement is expected later today, and they'll probably talk about it during the MLS all-star game tomorrow. BTW, if any Quakes fans haven't heard, join us at the Brittania Arms downtown for the MLS all-star viewing party, put a deposit on 2008 season tickets, and get a free t-shirt.
Okay, that's all.
Oh yeah, and go to the Hypnodrome for "Live Acts and Dead Channels" tonight, July 18.

Jason watches Soccer
Hey, that's not a movie!
But it was Mexico vs. Ecuador at the Oakland Coliseum (I think that's NetAss Coliseum now?) Co-sponsored by San Jose Earthquakes LLC, it was a great opportunity for Lew Wolf, the organization, and the fans to show their dedication to soccer in the Bay Area. And it was a great drinking opportunity. We got there around 5:00, the tailgate had been going since 3:00. A couple of hours of drinking and pigging out, then our wave of blue marched into the stadium. Here's a shot of the Club Quakes caravan heading in:

Here's a shot of the field from our seats. Pretty sweet section. Normally $60 tickets, Club Quake got them for $30 pre-sale. Rumor has it you could get up to $150 for them if you wanted to scalp them. But screw that.
It was insanely loud with all the Mexico fans (and some Ecuadoreans), and the game itself was very exciting. Mexico scored first within 40 seconds, and it looked like it'd be a laugher. But the middle part of the game went to Ecuador, who tied it before the half and went up 2:1 early in the second (and all of a sudden the Ecuadorean fans were visible). But then they started playing defensively (and poorly, lots of long clearances to nobody) and were either gassed or just got out of the game mentally. The final 25 minutes belonged to Mexico, who scored 3 more goals to make it 4-2. And a good time was had by all (except Ecuador).
The fans were really amped up, and about 90% supportive of us Quakes fans. A few gave us a little shit, but it's not like the Mexican national team competes with a non-existent MLS team. And many had fond memories of and good hopes for the future of the Quakes game. Here's hoping when (and it's looking pretty sure now that it's when, not if) we have our team back, some of these fans will come to the games in San Jose.

Jason loves the Primitive Screwheads
I love legitimate theater!
So the Primitive Screwheads, the fine people who brought you (or me) Evil Dead Live, Re-Animator Live, The Texas Chainsaw Massacres, and the Crazy Go Nuts Show, are wrapping up their run of H 3-D: The True Tale of the Haddonfield Babysitter Murderer (last show tonight, March 24). I skipped out on the SJ opening night of Asianfest to see it, and it was a blast. Based loosely on the Halloween movies, but with lots of silly humor (like Michael Meyers isn't his real name, Michael was his middle name, but his real first name is Oscar), and buckets of blood. Oh yeah, and beer. Yeah, that's the important stuff--blood and beer.
Anyway, here's what I looked like after the show:

And here's some other fans, with cast member Chris Bowen (who played retarded boy Gilhooley Verkamp, and is a very convincing retard)
And, in keeping with my new-found interesting in publishing upcoming cool stuff, look for them to put on Night of the Living Dead...Live, this June!

Jason has more fun with how people find jasonwatchesmovies
As of 7:10 am, Feb 20, 2007, this blog is officially the #1 google search result for "trepanning a mermaid". Greetings to all the mermaid trepanation fans reading this!
Also, I've inspired Dan to start his own movie blog. I've seen him at several film festivals in the city. If you want to read some well-written counterpoints to my reviews, check it out. We often have completely opposite taste in movies. The ones that don't do it for me are often his favorites, and vice-versa.

Jason laughs at San Francisco
So walking to the theater this morning, I saw this sticker everywhere. I agree with the sentiment, but can you see why this makes me laugh? I'll give you a hint...today is February 17. After the strident addendum of "Now!" to their plea, they announce that they'll hold a rally a month from now. That made me laugh.
Sorry this isn't about movies. And again, I do agree with thesentiment. US out of Iraq...Eventually!
Jason Loves the Crazy Go Nuts Show!
So I won't have time to write up the last of indiefest until Monday (hopefully, maybe not even Tuesday). But I just got home from the Crazy Go Nuts Show (live stage comedy show). Here's some pics of my personal aftermath. Note that this is less blood than they usually use, since they didn't want to mess up the Victoria too badly.

Jason Watches Soccer.
With Dave, Cynthia, Dan, Becky, another Dave, and Dustin. Halftime and US and Denmark are tied 1-1.
--update, the final score was 3-1 USA! Yay!
--Another update, and clarification. The names I listed above are from left to right (mostly. Becky is actually slightly to the left but mostly below Dan). Also "another Dave" is actually my friend and colleague Dave (and Becky's husband). The first Dave I met just before the game and is a friend of my friend and colleague Dave (and Becky). So I think of him as "other Dave", but it would've been weird to start listing the names with "other Dave". Okay, was that needlessly confusing enough? These are the Daves I know, I know, these are the Daves I know...

Jason mourns the loss of a bit of America's Greatness
Okay, this is a non-movie post, but now that I have a blog, I can talk about whatever stupid crap I want to.
For example, In-n-Out burgers. Without a doubt, still the best fast food burger around, despite the fact that you can't get them with bacon (that's another story). Anyway, their basic menu is a burger, cheeseburger, or "double-double". The double-double is 2 patties, 2 pieces of cheese. However, if you order it they'll also make a triple-triple, 4x4, or say...a 20x20. Really, you could order an MxN with M patties and N pieces of cheese (if you've never tried a 0x10, it's disgusting). At least that was true until recently. About a month ago I was grabbing some dinner at the In-n-Out. I had been good, not pigging out a lot recently so I decided to treat myself to a 6x6. But when I ordered, they just laughed at me and said their new policy is not to serve anything larger than a 4x6. I was flabbergasted. When did they do this!? Okay, I ended up getting 2 4x4's, thereby confounding any plan they might have had of keeping me from overindulging. But that's not the point, and that's not what upset me. First I'm upset that they laughed at me. Normally I would just take that in stride but historically I've had the most amazingly polite service at the In-n-Out. I assumed that was trained into them extensively. So that surprised me. But the real reason this bugged me goes back to my first time eating a 20x20.
This was back when I was in college, in Pasadena, where I was first introduced to the In-n-Out burger. Our local In-n-Out was about a mile or two from campus, so you had to either find someone with a car (I didn't have one) or walk. Well, one night I was angry about something, and decided to sink that anger in a big pile of meat and cheese. So I walked to the In-n-Out, which was one of the old style ones that's just a drive up kiosk, no place to eat inside. But they had a walk-up window. So I walked up to the window and said, "Hi, may I have a 20x20, animal style, with both raw and grilled onions, but no tomatoes, please?" (animal style, by the way, includes extra spices, pixels, etc. It's delicious). The nice lady who took my order obviously knew what she was doing, and keyed it in perfectly without even having to ask me to repeat it (which is rare). But when she gave the order to the cook, he must have been new because he said, "A 20x20, I don't know if I can do that!" And without missing a beat, she turned around and said, "Hey! You can do anything!" Ever since then, whenever I go to the In-n-Out and order a ridiculously large burger, I'm reminded that this is America and "hey, you can do anything!" But not anymore! And that's what bugs me.
By the way, for those of you thinking that eating a 20x20 would be incredibly painful, it's nothing compared to 3 days later when you take the biggest, hardest crap of your life.
