And it's pretty good. Especially the acting. Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are brilliant. Brilliant enough to actually make me care about the problems of an old, lonely dyke (okay, that's not explicit but pretty heavily implied) and a younger statutory rapist. Brilliant enough to overcome the heavy-handed use of voice over narration of Judi Dench writing in her diary. And composer Phillip Glass once again pulls off the seemingly impossible feat of being both minimalist and overbearing (which somehow is pitch-perfect for this film). All in all, I'd say it got exactly the Oscar nominations it deserved and none that it didn't deserve.
